Israel-Hamas Conflict: Singapore's Stance and Interfaith
I engaged in a podcast with Singapore Minister Ong Ye Kung to discuss Singapore's stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, offering insights as a Singaporean involved in interfaith initiatives, particularly fostering Jewish-Muslim dialogue. Initially hesitant about sharing my views, I sought advice and reflected on various perspectives, including Singaporean, human rights, diplomacy, international law, and religious viewpoints like Jewish, Muslim, and Christian. Despite expecting negative feedback, I was prepared to share my experiences as a Singaporean Muslim engaged in interfaith dialogue with Jewish and Christian communities concerned about the conflict.
Following the podcast release, there were mixed reactions. Some comments hurt, but I empathised with those trying to understand my identity and role. I received overwhelming support messages and invitations for dialogue from those seeking moderate conversations to comprehend different sides of the conflict. While I acknowledged critics and disregarded trolls, I needed to focus on those genuinely interested in learning more in a respectful and peaceful way.
I intended to be in this podcast to share the side of history I wish to stand in, which is being dedicated to the work of interfaith dialogue against the backdrop of the war. In the given time, I shared how years of interfaith relationship building allowed me to connect with Jewish people and Israelis, keeping aside our different political views. I care about this war affecting interreligious relations through antisemitism and Islamophobia. This cycle of conflict has persisted for far too long, and I was taking a stance against that within my limited role.
I understand that some people may not fully appreciate what I have conveyed here, particularly if they are not familiar with me and the work I undertake. Despite being aware of the potential criticism and attacks that I may receive, I chose to appear on this podcast to share my observations and experiences. It was only later that I realized how much my words resonated with many people, especially young Singaporeans who may not have been vocal on social media about these issues.
Holding the Ropes: Interfaith Dialogue & Reflections Surrounding the Israel-Gaza War is a blog series that follows the events, dialogues and reflections experienced by Nazhath Faheema in the aftermath of the 2023 Israel-Gaza war. Triggered by the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and Israel’s military response, there continues to be widespread destruction and civilian displacement in Gaza. Additionally, Israeli hostages remain in captivity.
Against this backdrop, Nazhath Faheema, through her reflections, provides insights into the dynamics of the war, its impact on interfaith relations, and the inherent challenges and opportunities in fostering understanding and empathy between Jewish and Muslim communities.
